After coming to faith in Christ my greatest struggle was, and continues to be, learning to be a Christian without losing myself. Naturally, there are some things about a Christian that must change (I mean sin is real and our flesh does crave it). And our Lord does say in Luke 9:23, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me”. But what does that really mean? Am I to be different? How so? Does my church determine this? Culture? How do I think like a Christian?
Enter, the Worldview series. In this series my hope is to tackle a few misconceptions about what it means to be a Christian, answer some questions relating to Christian culture, and hopefully inform you of how to think like a Christian. I am not sure how long this series will last, but I anticipate this being an ongoing series as I receive feedback from the audience.
But let’s start by defining “worldview”. Oxford would define it as, “a particular philosophy of life or conception of the world”. But I am more partial to the Wikipedia definition, “A worldview or world-view is the fundamental cognitive orientation of an individual or society encompassing the whole of the individual's or society's knowledge and point of view. A worldview can include natural philosophy; fundamental, existential, and normative postulates; or themes, values, emotions, and ethics”. Essentially, a worldview is the lens through which we evaluate everything. And I mean everything.
I had no concept of a biblical worldview as a young Christian but a pastor at one of the first churches I ever attended, told me that, “The most fundamental thing a new Christian is to learn, would be building a biblical worldview”. This advice was essential to me learning how to be myself the Christian, rather than being half myself, half Christian. I hope you find this series helpful.
